March 16th: Surface Design in Clay with Turiya Gross
“My inspiration for surface and firing techniques are often based on pieces I see in museums ( wether consciously or unconsciously) . I feel deeply connected to shapes and surfaces that can draw attention to the human touch and craftsmanship.
In a world where we discard our single use objects, I want my work to help slow down our lives and appreciate a moment in time and space.
I think it is incredibly difficult to create space and pause ourselves with the mechanized ways in which we carry our daily lives.” - Turiya Gross
Turiya Gross is a ceramic artist from Mexico based in Taos, NM. She has been working with clay for over 18 or so years. Her work focuses on decorative surface design as well as form. Her influences are Folk Art traditions from across the World and it is inspired by the blue and white brushwork decoration from Mexico and Turkey.
This demo day will explore different surface techniques using slips with different kinds of brushes , loop tools and exacto knives on clay tiles. We will work on applied slip decoration, wax resist decoration as well as sgraffito carving. This demo will also be heavily focused on utilizing different types of brushes.
This one day demonstration running from 11a.m. - 4 p.m. .
This demonstration coincides with and would be further informed by attending the opening of Syncretics: Crafting Identityon March 15th at the Saratoga Clay Arts Center.
