April 26, 27 and 30: Soda Firing with Reactive Slips with Hunter Cady

$395.33
sold out

This three day firing workshop led by Hunter Cady will focus on the use of a variety of reactive slips as loading strategies for a cone 10-11 gas powered soda firing. In this workshop participants will explore the effects of soda firing using colored reactive slips. These slips will result in vibrant surfaces similar to both slip and glaze. Through the application and layering of slips participants will create surfaces that are full of color and depth. We will discuss loading techniques to utilize the path of the flame and distribution of soda to our advantage.  Participants will glaze work and load the kiln as a group on the first day, and participate in strategies for firing a gas reduction kiln and introducing soda into a kiln. After the firing the kiln will cool, and students will return for a day of opening the kiln and discussion on the firing results.

Participants will bring Each participant is allotted 2 cubic feet of bisque fired work made from cone 10 clay. We also encourage students to bring a few extra “stuffer” pieces that are approximately 3x2x2. These are not priority pieces, but are easy to use to fill gaps in the kiln, and can be added if there is extra space. After registration participants will receive an email with a list of cone 10 clays and any extra information on the workshop.

6 participant maximum
