sold out

For the 5th installment of the double fire workshop, Andrew and Harry are bringing focus to the drama of a drippy surface. When you think woodfire these are the kinds of surfaces that most likely come to mind. The highest drama of fire, ash, and heat played out directly on the work; The most prized and coveted pots from the kiln. We will fire both the train and the soda kiln with an emphasis on building dynamic molten surfaces that flow across, down, and around pots. Learning objectives include placement of pots for achieving drippy surface, guiding and anticipating drips, giving space for natural drip formations, as well as how to induce them with glaze. Participants will load and fire the 2 kilns back-to-back under the guidance of Andrew and Harry. This five day firing workshop consists of a very immersive day of loading strategies while both kilns are loaded, two days of firing the train kiln as a team, and then immediately after one day of firing the soda kiln. Both kilns will be unloaded two days later. Participants will have the opportunity to compare surfaces between both firings for the final day of the workshop learning from both experiences towards a deeper understanding of atmospheric surface potential.

Participants will bring Each participant is allotted 1.5-2.5 cubic feet of bisque fired cone 10 work to be split and loaded equally in the train kiln and soda kiln. For reference a standard milk crate is roughly 1 cubic foot of space. If you cannot pack all of your work into 2 milk crates with no packing materials it is more than the allotment. We also encourage students to 5-10 extra “stuffer” pieces that are approximately 2x2x2. These are not priority pieces, but are easy to use to fill gaps in the kiln, and can be added if there is extra space. Every load is different and the kilns will be loaded and shared equally between all participants. After registration participants will receive an email with a list of cone 10 clays and any extra information on the workshop.
